Dams and Kinetic, Potential and Mechanical Energy:
River As Kinetic Energy:
First, consider the 'Dam' part of Dam-Atoll. A dam captures moving river water and stores it all as a lake at a level above the downstream portion of the river. The moving river water is kinetic energy. Kinetic Energy Transformed To Potential Energy:
Now energy is always conserved. So when, temporarily stopped by the dam, the water ceases to move, its kinetic energy has been converted to potential energy. One part of the potential energy is the water's "wanting" so to speak to plunge down to the downstream portion of the river below at the bottom of the dam—the non-stop pull of gravity on the water to continue its course to the sea. The other part of the water's potential energy is the weight of the water pressing on the bottom of the lake: the water pressure created by the downward pull of gravity.Potential Energy Transformed Back To Kinetic Energy:
The water's potential energy gets transformed back to kinetic energy either by spilling over the top of the dam, or by flowing through a hole near the bottom of the dam and getting discharged back into the river, eventually to reach the sea. Such a hole takes advantage of both the position of the water above the downstream portion of the river and the intense water pressure near the bottom of the lake. Kinetic Energy Turned Into Mechanical Energy:
The rapid and intense flow of the water through the hole turns a turbine, which in turn typically generates electricity. In this way, the water's kinetic energy is transformed to mechanical energy. Mechanical energy is a type of kinetic energy: it is kinetic energy that is performing work adapted to some human purpose. To sum up: a dam first turns kinetic energy to potential energy, then back to kinetic energy, then to mechanical energy -- and then finally, in most cases, to electrical energy.(next)
