DAM-ATOLL

Ocean Wave Energy Extraction Device

The Name Dam-Atoll Shows How It Works.

Dam-Atoll

is an almalgram of two concepts: dam, and atoll. Just as a dam captures river water, an atoll captures a wave. We can gain an over-all picture of how Dam-Atoll works by taking a look at what a dam does with a river, and what an atoll does with a wave.

Dams and Potential And Kinetic Energy:

How a dam converts water energy to electrical energy shows many of the basic concepts behind Dam-Atoll. Water flowing down a stream exhibits kinetic energy. When the water is stopped by a dam, that kinetic energy is turned into potential energy. Because the water near the top of the dam is much higher than the stream below the dam, the constant pull of gravity results in the dammed-up water having a substantial potential energy. The water "wants" to go down, so to speak, but for the moment it cannot. When the water finally falls down to the stream below, this change from an initial higher position to a lower position results converts the water's potential energy back to kinetic energy. This kinetic energy of the falling water can then be converted to mechanical energy by a turbine wheel. So a dam first turns potential energy to kinetic energy, then to mechanical energy -- and then finally, in most cases, to electrical energy.
